Veterans Services

Veterans may be entitled to receive Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefits of up to $1,644 per month. A surviving spouse may be eligible for up to $1,055 per month and a couple may be eligible for up to $1,949 per month. This is NOT A LOAN but a guaranteed lifetime, tax free benefit!

To qualify you must be at least 65 years of age,  served at least one day during a war time period, had 90 days of continuous service and received an honorable discharge.  You must require help with Activities for Daily Living (ADL's) as defined by the VA. Typically these services are provided through a VA approved In-Home Care company like Senior Helpers or if personal care is needed in an Assisted Living Facility.

YOU CAN REMAIN LIVING IN YOUR HOME AS LONG AS YOU WANT. THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO MOVE INTO A FACILITY.

This little known benefit was even featured on NBC evening news. See the video including the following Story from NBC Nightly News Trading Places, Caring for Your Parents

As with any governmental program, there are specific rules that Veterans must follow and Senior Helpers can assist you  in the process. We can help you complete the VA documents and even get you to the Veterans Service Officer that processes all the applications. Senior Helpers also works closely with an Elder Law attorney to assist with estate planning, VA financial compliance and even help avoid Medi-Cal forfeiture. The Veterans aid and Attendance Improved Pension

For 58 years, the Veterans Administration has offered this little known benefit to Veterans and surviving spouses. If you need regular attendance of another person to assist in matters such as eating, bathing, dressing, undressing, medication dosing, or taking care of the needs of nature to receive additional monetary benefits, you’ll likely qualify. The A&A also provides for individuals who are blind or a patient in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity or if you require assisted care in a facility, you may qualify if proper steps are taken.

  • Many individuals have been denied benefits because they simply do not understand how to properly meet the VA requirements
  • Most Veterans can qualify for this benefit without spending down their entire savings but you’ll need a strategy to be successful
  • $1644 per month equals $19,728 tax free every year for an in-home care!

  3. The veteran is a patient in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity, OR,
  4. The veteran is blind, or so nearly blind as to have corrected visual acuity of 5/200 or less, in both eyes, or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.

Housebound is paid in addition to monthly pension. Like A&A, Housebound benefits may not be paid without eligibility to pension. A veteran may be eligible for Housebound benefits when:

  2. The veteran has a single permanent disability evaluated as 100-percent disabling AND, another disability, or disabilities, evaluated as 60 percent or more disabling.

A veteran cannot receive both Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits at the same time.
